John McAfee arrested in Spain for tax evasion

created Michał SielskiSEPTEMBER 7, 2020

One of the most famous influencers in the cryptocurrency world has just been arrested in Spain and is awaiting extradition to the US. John McAfee has been accused of tax avoidance for at least 4 years. The controversial businessman is threatened with up to 24 years in prison.

John McAfee is a character that most people who were interested in the Internet and new technologies at the time of the 1993th century have undoubtedly heard about it. He created a company that by 67 had a XNUMX% share of the entire antivirus market in the world. Virtually every computer had its antivirus program installed at some time. He made millions, hired and fired whomever he wanted, and the company reportedly had some weird events, such as contests for people who would have sex in the weirdest place in the office.

The controversial businessman sold the company for $ 100 million, an amount that would undoubtedly be enough to live an immodest life until his last days. But the extrovert could not take the drink with the palm and under the palm. He began to try new things - like many entrepreneurs who believe that they will turn everything they touch into gold, because they once succeeded.

Belize - beatings, murder, rape charges

He began writing books, lived in Belize, and was obsessed with his safety. His house became a stronghold full of bodyguards armed to the teeth. He himself paraded with the rifle at every possible opportunity. It even happened that after dark, the security patrolled not only the vicinity of the property, but the entire town, drawing attention to people who dared to leave their homes.

He liked peace because he had lived with a few teenage girls on the property and he didn't want to be disturbed. This, however, was clearly not enough for him, because it was in Belize that he was accused of rape. One of the women working for him (he was running a "laboratory" that was supposed to produce drugs at the time, but ultimately produced nothing) stated that he had tricked her into giving her a rape pill, remembers nothing for almost a day, and bleeding the next day. When she fled to the US and reported the case to the FBI, she was told that an investigation could not be launched against a citizen of that country in a case that took place in Belize. A search of the house and the company was carried out by local authorities, but found "only" a warehouse of unregistered weapons.

After the move, his neighbor mysteriously died, complaining of nuisance dogs and McAfee's bodyguards. Earlier, a boy who broke into his villa was beaten to death. So the millionaire fled to Guatemala, and eventually returned to the US and even wanted to run in the presidential election, but ultimately did not top the Democrat list.

Cryptocurrencies? Get into it

Despite his riotous lifestyle (or maybe thanks to him?), McAfee has an army not only at home, but also on the Internet. Over 1 million people follow him on Twitter alone. Of course, he uses it as best he can, promoting new cryptocurrency projects there. And it is precisely this, and not the previous crimes he may have committed, that is the cause of his undoing.

The US Department of Justice accused John McAfee of tax evasion. How did he do it? First of all, he bought real estate and yachts for people - he was not officially their owner. He also invested in cryptocurrencies.

However, he felt so unpunished that he did not file tax returns in 2014-2018. And this, as we remember from the times of the legendary Al Capone, is an unforgivable crime in the USA. Every year he is facing the present  five years in prison, or 20 years, as well as a year in prison for each year of revenue latency, or another 4 years.

It is about USD 23 million, which John McAfee received mainly in BTC and ETH. For one entry on Twitter was supposed to delete up to 105 thousand. USD. The problem is that the entries were not marked as advertising, and McAfee argued in them how great it would pay off to invest in specific projects. He was also sued for this by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Everything seems to indicate that the turbulent life of 75-year-old John McAfee is changing a lot. Especially since no one will experience a heart attack a second time, thanks to which he avoided arrest in Guatemala ...
